Jim Brown: A Student Review
"I hear people say athletes should stop using drugs because they're role models. These people are naive about drugs. A guy strung out on cocaine cares about seting an example for kids? He cares about stuffing his nose with cocaine . Period." This excerpt pretty much sums up the type of person Jim Brown is. He is a staight foward, serious, intimidating person. This excerpt is saying why would a person on drugs care about setting an example for kids since all he or she could think about is their next high. I chose this excerpt, because it shows all the previously mentioned characteristics of Jim Brown. This book is an autobiography, so Jim Brown wrote this book. He had the help of Steve Delsohn. He covers his outstanding football career at Syracuse University. He is also able to give coverage of his outstanding career as a professional football player. He covers the numerous women who have been a part of his life, and he also discusses the football coaches that he dealt with during his football career. Brown also openly discusses his role in many social issues of the time. These are some of the things that are discussed in the book. This book is written in the first person point of view.
Margo's girlfriend beat her up, and told her to tell the police that Jim Brown did it. Most of the book is told from the late 1960's to the late 1980's in Cleveland, and at his mansion in L. Brown is not using any fancy writing or figurative language, and that's a good thing. There was nothing to indicate that Jim had raped Margo. His grandmother would tell him things he had done when he was a little boy, and how she wanted a new bathroom for their old white house. While Jim was playing pro football, his grandmother contracted cancer. I also noticed that the tone of the book is very mature. He was there for him when his own family wasn't and he is a bad person? Not by a longshot. If you want a book that has depth, tenderness, and a ruthless honesty, this is the book for you. Jim used a lot of dialouge from his life while writing this book. Margo was a tomboy, and a self-admitted lesbian. When Jim was in college, some of his coaches told him he was not good enough to play collegiate football. This is easily the best sports bio I've read. Two neighbors of Margo's girlfriend said that Margo and her girlfriend had engaged in a loud, violent fight.
