In Evelyn Waugh’s, A Handful of Dust, Tony Last exists as an aristocrat whose devotion to Victorian values and beliefs controls and dictates his life; leaving him blind to the unhappiness and boredom his wife, Brenda, experiences due to his primitive and outdated ways. Tony’s obsession with the Victorian lifestyle only intensifies with his exposure to the material and transient qualities of the new, emerging society. The rapid development of this society shortens the existence of the Victorian lifestyle and seemingly leaves Tony as the last member of his beloved British society. Unwilling to conform and desperately clinging to his traditional ways, Tony creates his existence as an outsider; rejected and abandoned by society he seeks refuge and familiarity in Hetton. "But there was not a glazed brick or encaustic tile that was not dear to Tony's heart" (13), he cherished every bit of that estate. " This was the invariable procedure when he appeared at church without her" (40), he was forced to lie in order to cover up his corruption of ethical values. Tony in contrast is sticking with his English values, "One has a duty towards one's employees and towards the place too. For seven years Tony and Brenda have been having scenes of marital liveliness, this would in turn be a sign that Tony's Victorian values are getting in the way they are not acceptable. " (236) Tony was trapped by his Victorian values and his old way of life to the point of hallucination. His loyalty and dedication to his estate was that of outstanding perseverance. The dreary and economically stagnant life at Hetton drives Brenda to London where she instigates an affair with the younger, parasitic John Beaver. Another example of Tony's strong beliefs is when he goes to church without Brenda. She always avoided staying in Hetton, and preferred the escape and freedom she felt in London. The way he was brought up he realized a husband in his position is required of him.
