Young Goodman Brown
The story, "Young Goodman Brown" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about a young Puritan man's faith in God and his religious conviction. The story takes place in a forest on the outskirts of a Salem village after the witch trials. Goodman Brown must leave his wife to venture on a journey into the forest. On this journey he will be tempted by the devil. However, Goodman Brown will refuse to give into temptation and will return to his village a changed man. To understand Young Goodman Brown's journey and what caused him to change, and its effect on him, we need to carefully analyzing the symbols in the story. The characters that Young Goodman Brown meets, his ultimate decision, and his life after he returns to the village. Young Goodman Brown, he is about to venture off on a journey into the forest. This becomes evident when his wife, Faith, begs him, to put off his journey until sunrise. In the story the word Faith symbolizes, not only Young Goodman Brown's wife name but also his religious conviction. The rest of his life is destroyed because of his inability to hold on to his Faith in God. The serpent of course is known throughout the Bible as a symbol that represents the devil. He becomes depressed because Faith was all he had that could give him strength to resist the devil. He becomes a little shaken and looks to the sky and says, "With Heaven above, and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil. He then changes his mind again and says, "My mind is made up. They discuss the meeting that they are going to attend that night in the forest. They eventually come upon on old woman walking. What if a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil, when I thought she was going to Heaven! Is that any reason why I should quit my dear Faith, and go after her being content with his decision not to succumb to the devil, he sits down to rest awhile. Even though Goodman Brown is going into the forest to commit an evil purpose, he is fighting a battle within himself. He looks at his wife and cries, "Faith! Faith! Look up to Heaven, and resist the wicked one Young Goodman Brown awakes wondering if this was only a dream, or did his meeting with the devil actually take place? Dream or not, this journey into the forest changes his life forever making him a distrustful person who eventually dies full of unhappiness because he has lost his faith in God. A quote from the bible says, "Let ye who is free from sin cast the first stone. Continuing on his journey he eventually comes to his destination, which is an altar in the forest surrounded by flaming red trees. He grabs it and cries out, "My Faith is gone. " Goodman Brown knows that if he accepts the staff then he will be succumbing to evil.
