Pop Art
Pop Art is the abbreviation of Popular Art and is one of the most extraordinary innovations of twentieth century art. Started in the middle of 1950s in England, Pop Art emerged in American in the early 1960s. Truly to its name - Popular art wanted to bring art back to the daily life of people. Among the key figures of Pop Artists, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol are two of the most influential ones. In 1952, Rauschenberg created a sculpture in the name of "Untitled" by combining paint, mirrors, glass, film backing paper on a wood-and-metal Coca Cola bottle crate. Eleven years later, in 1962, Warhol created the painting "Lavender Disaster" which is one of the many pieces of his death-and-disaster series.Those two art works are similar in many ways, such as the art movements they were influenced under, the type of subjects they chose, the using of repetition and the color scheme in those two artworks. First of all, both artworks are greatly influenced by Pop Art Movement in 1960s. As key figures of Pop Art Movement, both Warhol and Rauschenberg believed that "Abstract Expressionism" was too serious and sophisticated for the public and they wanted to bridge the gap between the "high art" and the "low art" by brining
Warhol's "Lavender Disaster" placed the electric execution chair in the middle of each section as the focal point and the image catches the viewers' attention the moment you lay your eyes on the artwork. By observing those two artworks, we can conclude that the subjects of both art works are derived from popular culture and every day life. It reminds the viewers that death is inevitable and is the destination for every human being and we need to accept it as it is as it can happen at every second of every day. With all of their similarities and differences, both Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg are credited for their great influence in Pop Art Movements in 1960s and their works and styles have great impact in twentieth century art. There is not a particular emphasis or focal point on the sculpture. In Rauschenberg's art work, the whole Coca Cola crate was painted black with white painted on some of the square openings of the crate. In regarding to using of media, Warhol's work is more traditional than Rauschenberg's work who integrates many materials which were not traditionally considered art materials such as mirrors, glass, metal and printed paper into his artwork. It is pretty obvious that the two artworks use different media to achieve their effects. It gives the viewers a chance to view their living environment in a different angle and perspective by presenting the image of everyday life using materials we see and use in daily life. Warhol's "Lavender Disaster" chose an image of an electrical execution chair - a rather gruesome and unpleasant image as the subject of his work. Rauschenberg's "Untitled" is a sculpture using the process of assemblage by combine things found in every day life. It almost seems that the viewers are following a map in a cramped neighborhood on a busy city street. Both artworks use black and white color extensively. in elements of daily life to their artworks.
