A seat belt has been defined as a safety strap attached to the seat of a passenger or a safety strap or harness designed to hold a person securely in a seat, as in a motor vehicle or aircraft. Also called safety belt. Seatbelts are a proven lifesaver, which the government has recognized and therefore made it a mandatory law that all passengers wear their seatbelts at all time while riding in an automobile. After extensive research and review on seat belt statistics, it is clear that the mandatory law that states all passengers in an automobile must wear a seatbelt at all times has saved many lives over the years and must remain in effect. It is simply inexcusable for one to put their life or the life of their passengers at risk by not buckling up. When dealing with the issue of whether or not wearing a seatbelt should be mandatory or optional the answer is quite obvious. These statistics speak for themselves when it comes to explaining the value of wearing a seat belt. Thus, the increased usage of seat belts has likely reduced the potential for vehicle occupants to sustain injuries in motor vehicle crashes. The problem that our country faces is some individuals feel that this mandatory law is a violation of their freedom of rights and so they choose not to strap on their belts. If only the small percentage of motorists who still do not wear a seat belt when driving remembered to buckle up, the injury and fatalities numbers may even drop to a more significant level in the future. There is only a small percentage of collisions in which the seat belt may cause worse injuries to the occupants than if they were unrestrained, however this usually prevents the occupant from being thrown out of their automobile With all the above statistics showing how seat belts have stopped many injuries form occurring and has saved many lives, many people still ask how the seat belt prevents such events from happening. The percentage of occupants who wear seat belts has steadily increased from 55% in 1984 to over 90 % in 1994. Since 1979, over 220,000 personal injuries and 3,000 deaths have resulted each year in Canada from automobile collisions" Since the Federal and Provincial governments passed the legislative law that made seat belt use mandatory over a quarter century ago, the number of automobile injuries and fatalities has significantly dropped over the years. The interior of the vehicle is also measured and examined for any evidence of occupant contacts. More females than males also believed that if they were stopped for not wearing a seat belt and ticketed, that the ticket would be adequate and well deserved. For occupants in an automobile not to wear their seatbelts due to some irrational reasoning is simply inexcusable. Although it is possible for an occupant in a car to not be ejected from their car during a minor car accident were then impact is minimal, it is virtually impossible for an occupant to not be ejected when the force of impact is at its maximum. "In Saskatchewan alone in 2004, 46 of the 69 people killed who were not wearing seat belts were ejected or partially ejected from their vehicles.
