Compare the ways in which Alice Walker and Jeanette Winterso

Compare the ways in which Alice Walker and Jeanette Winterson reveal the impact of strong women on the lives of Celie and Jeanette.

In both books there are strong women who affect the lives of the narrators in many different ways. Shug and Sophia are used as tools to shape and mould of Celie’s changing life; in the same way Elsie is used to transport information to Jeanette in order for her views to change of religion and other important beliefs. Alice Walker and Jeanette Winterson use all of their strong women characters, to eventually produce strong women of their narrators. This is not only heart touching but also inspiring for every women out there that is afraid to speak or act.

Alice Walker uses Shug and Sophia as instruments in order for Celie to flourish. By using the characters as she did she enabled the reader to see that Celie was strong underneath but needed help in order to find herself. Celie is surrounded by powerful women at Mr ______’s house, which enables her to gain an incite into how stronger women cope with the world that they live in. Bizarrely enough both women that she uses as role models have extremely different qualities, which make the book exceptionally inspiring.

. . .

This quotation emphasises how Celie’s self-awareness has increased during the book. Elise supported and appreciated everything that Jeanette did for her, more than what anybody else in the world and was delighted when Jeannette had spent time to make something for her. ’

This quotation I believe shows Sophia’s qualities to her up most. Both characters are completely different in appearance and actions but they individually help Celie to become a stronger woman. She notices parts of Shugs body, which she never would have observed if she was bathing another women; she also notices that she is looking at her nipples and comparing them to her mouth, and how she is excited with the prospect of touching her. God help, Celie going to make you well. ’

Even though Celie is considered the very weak character she does have qualities hidden within her which Shug and Sophia help extract via their time together. Even though their relationship could be considered quite strange due to the huge age difference between them, they gain hours of friendship and support and become very close – they except each other for who they are and do not try to change each other.

Shug has great self-confidence; she tells men what to do, lives her life how she wants to live it using her beauty, her figure, self-confidence, glamour and sexual features.

When she eventually meets Shug, it’s ironic that she is weak and can hardly stand which is the complete opposite of what she has been perceived earlier in the book, but this is a turning point in Celie’s life. This is a completely new prospect for Celie as she has always believed that women should just do what men say and be prepared to be beaten, they should just stand their ‘like a tree. Elsie is extremely different from her Jeanette’s mother, her faith comes and goes and while she is mot with the Lord she is painting her skirting boards.

Via Celie’s absolute love for Shug it ironically brings Mr ___ and Celie even closer in the book, even though they do not act like man and wife their relationship flourishes as they finally have something in common which they can talk about. Elsie is her only release not only when she was a young child but also when she grew up. Celie is in awe of her and stares at her picture at whatever chance she has.
