If we look at the nature of knowledge in ancient Greece we see that at first, the Greeks used gods to explain the occurrence of things, which they could not understand through lack of scientific proof. For example, they thought the gods controlled the rising and setting of the sun. Most things were explained through mythology. These were stories, which served as explanations for things in life. Educated Europeans had learned that natural laws governed the universe. Aristotle-pupil of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great-. Many of them used the knowledge of scientific theory, human right, and self-determination to become leaders of independence movements in their nation. Plato-pupil of Socrates believed to arrive at the truth and to be virtuous one must appreciate certain universal ideas. Another important effect of people beginning to think more openly and not look to the church for answers was the founding of universities, where males could study philosophy, law, medicine, and learn from the advances made in the Muslim culture. If people were able to discover this knowledge, it might be used to construct a better government and a more just society. The Greek philosophers searched for the truth and for guidance to a good life. His Dialogues told us about Socrates. Instead of seeking the old stories to explain things, the Greek thinkers begin to explain that events in nature take place in accordance with unchanging law, rather than because it is the actions of the gods. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are considered to be among the greatest Sophists of all time. The people were offered three choices: fight, convert, or pay tribute. These spirits determine everything. Socrates-made his students question all things as a way of arriving at the truth.
