The American Revolution was an inevitable time in history where the settlers of England's North American colonies needed to take control and break free of England's oppression. According to Thomas Paine, an island cannot rule a continent. Previously, colonies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America had claimed their freedom from the European powers. There are many people who helped to establish The United States as an independent home land, and from those many there are legends and figures that have remained as heroes in the books of history. From those figures in history, there are few who stand out as people significant to providing a strong foundation to the United States in its early stages of nationhood. James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, in order from least relevant to most relevant, are three figures who are significant in the way that they helped provide a strong foundation for the United States to grow from. James Madison was seen as a shy and non-confrontational kind of man, who became known in history as the "Father of the Constitution". Thomas Jefferson played an important role in the early stages of the US. Also, like Thomas Jefferson, a man he was lifelong friends with, James Madison was very opinionated when it came to the separation of church and state. But in order to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France, he had to expand his careful and precise interpretation of the Constitution. It is still one of the most heralded and appraised accomplishments of a president to date. The three men had outstanding professional careers as politicians. These men will forever be known as part of an elite group of prominent historical figures, which also includes George Washington, Abigail and John Adams, Aaron Burr, and Benjamin Franklin. In the beginning years of the United States he was appointed the first Secretary of the Treasury, under the Washington administration. During the Constitutional Convention in 1787, then assembled in Philadelphia, Madison was frequently involved in the debates. He played a major role in the planning, design, and construction of the capitol and the federal district. Alexander Hamilton was a clever politician. There actions, whether it is from financial plans to views on slavery, will be remembered forever in history. Madison was able to make a major contribution to the ratification of the Constitution by writing, with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton, the Federalist essays. He believed that religion had no authority in the actions of the federal government. Throughout his political career, James Madison had also two well noted views that he is remembered for.
