Audre Lorde and the Spoken word

Audrey Lorde believes that speaking your mind will set you free (Lorde 43). Not only is Lorde correct but the power of speech has made changes all through out society. In her essay “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action” and the poem “Coal” focuses on the spoken word. The spoken word has been an important concept through out life. With out people speaking out, how would changes be made in the first place? Nevertheless several people rather stay silent and hold on to their feelings since they feel that it is pointless to be out spoken.

In her poem the idea that stands out to me is that nothing is as it seems take “coal” for instance, coal is it just a dark little stone but when pressured in heat turns into a diamond. The speaker is trying to show that each word that is spoken is meaningful and has adds an important message to the poem. She is also trying to express that with each sentence she writes it conveys who she is. Now since she is being open with her self there is no reason for regrets in life. Lorde has an attention-grabbing way of expressing her points to the reader; not only does her diction flows eloquently but her rhetoric in her speech pulls readers into her writings. This makes her writing interesti

. . .
Like Lorde is trying to say that the perfect combination of words just glisten like a diamond in the sun, just reflects pure beauty astonishing every one in sight of it. Lorde answer Rich by telling to remember how she was asked to talk about her experience and how she felt that it did not deal with the panel at all. In the last stanza of the poem the speaker finishes by telling the reader “I am Black because I come from the earth inside/ now take my word for a jewel in the open light (22-23) In these lines she is telling the reader that beauty comes through the inside of the earth just like the diamond image you see through out the poem. Lorde is showing reader’s to live a pure life with out doubts and sadness. In this interview Lorde was asked “I’m thinking about when you had the first biopsy, in 1977, and we were both supposed to speak on a panel in Chicago. To tell everyone what on your mind since it begins with one person trying to make a difference in this world. She tells you in her speech to be open with yourself and the world (Lorde 40). Words are a marvelous tool for liars, as well as all honest people in the word. In addition it shows the changes that can happen like turning a lump of coal into a beautiful diamond.

In conclusion, my understanding of Lorde is that being honest with yourself is the best factor of anyone’s existence. With speaking out you are capable of a better understanding of life and as well as letting your feelings exposed makes existence simpler to deal with.

In an interview with Adrienne Rich, Lorde was asked questions about her essay “The Transformation of Silence into Language” (Lorde/ Rich 108). Words are the man’s tool in society to achieve his and her goal on life. These ideas are stressed in Lodes essay.
