Farenheit 451
Ray Bradbury uses fire in his book Fahrenheit 451 to warn his readers about the dangers of technology and enforced conformity through the main characters’ progress through the novel. Guy Montag, the protagonist of the novel, serves as a fireman whose job it is to burn concealed books. Clarisse, Montag’s next door neighbor, is a blithely carefree teenager that goes against everything the conformist society has set up and helps Montag come to the realization that there is no progress in conformity. Captain Beatty, another fireman, holds fast to the conformist beliefs presented to him and tries to pass these beliefs onto others, especially Montag. Montag, whose entire life is centered around fire, experiences a drastic change in Fahrenheit 451, one that is influenced by the major characters in the novel. Guy Montag’s life is centered around fire and the desire to burn, but that desire transforms into an appreciation for what he is burning. The conversations between Guy and Clarisse are what help Montag develop an appreciation for knowledge and understanding. When Clarisse tells Montag that he is not in love he actually responds. Other firemen would not take the time to even speak to Clarisse. She even talks him into tasting the . . .
Firemen are supposed to be indifferent to their actions. In the novel Beatty had one very important conversation with his colleague Montag during which he explains how the word “intellectual became the swear word it deserved to be” showing how the enrichment of the mind is not deemed as so but is seen as degrading (Bradbury 58). His hands are described as being inspired by a mind of their own. Beatty goes on to say that conformity is achieved by making everyone equal, not believing everyone is equal as stated in the constitution. Captain Beatty is a symbol of the new ways of life and the rules that go along with those new ways. Clarisse symbolizes the old ways of society, those of detail and caring which are considered obsolete in the novel. Even the children adopted the ways of their parents in the novel. The point is that people will never completely conform to one lifestyle, style of dress, or beliefs and to try to create a society that is alike in every way will never be possible. The death of Montag’s neighbor is meant to symbolize the ending of an era of detail, caring, and appreciation. Fire is extinguished by a downpour of water, and the flames of the new society that values nothing will also be extinguished by the water of knowledge and intellectualism. Clarisse also seems to cherish the rainfall because she said, “Rain feels good. Montag felt remorseful for burning a “criminal’s” house. In a conversation between Clarisse and Montag she stated that she is afraid of other kids her age because they kill each other.
