Dream theories

             Fables. Cartoons. Fairytales. Myths. Legends. From a young age, people are constantly bombarded with stories. While many of the tales may be fiction, that in no way undermines their purpose: to convey a moral, a lesson. Kilton Stewart first introduced the Senoi Dream Theory in the mid 20th century. His proposed theory claims that people have an inner power over their dreams. Dreamers can minimize their fright and conversely maximize their pleasure and sexual satisfaction. Stewart's work was a large step in the direction of the developing movement in the 1960s, which has become a part of the Dreamwork Movement. While Stewart's work was and still is very influential and significant, the Senoi dream theory is a foundation of a major debate. Many scholars, such as G. W. Domhoff, have spent much time analyzing and criticizing the authenticity of the dream theory, whether or not the Senoi originated this method, and if they even employed this technique at all. However, Even Stewart's critics realize that while the Senoi Dream Theory may be an allegory, a work of fiction, it is still useful as it teaches people to look into dreams and actually use them. Perhaps Kilton Stewart never intended the theory to be taken literally. Maybe he put it out there so that all those who read it can come out with a deeper meaning of dreams and themselves. The purpose of this paper is to use the arguments of Taylor, Garfield, and Domhoff to reveal the importance of Stewart's work despite its unknown origin and to explain that although it may not be authentic, its content is still a crucial key into the world of dreaming.
