Hemingway's "Cat in the Rain"
"Cat in the Rain" is Hemingway's idea of a modern day couple. He starts out the story by practically painting the picture with his words; his description in full detail. An American couple was staying in a hotel perhaps in Italy because of the language that was spoken. The wife stood at the window, looking out while her husband, George, lay reading a book on the bed. She sees a cat outside trying to keep dry under a table. Most of Hemingway's stories, if not all, seemed to have rain in them. Seeing the poor kitty, she demanded that she have the cat. George was not listening to her anymore. Well, with no luck finding the cat, the wife comes back too the room, now staring into a mirror. Suddenly, there was a knock at their door and the maid brought the wife a cat sent by the hotel- keeper. I think she wanted all those things because her husband did not give her anything. In my point of view, this short story by Ernest Hemingway, symbolizes today's modern couples because of the way the wife acted. She complained to her husband that she wanted to grow her hair long, have a cat to sit and purr on her lap, and have it be spring time, the wife almost seemed to be going into a nervous breakdown. The wife, now calm, demanded that she has a cat since she can not grow her hair long or have it be spring. By doing so, he made her feel really important. Most likely, her husband does not give her any attention. Perhaps she likes it so much because she's not used to all the attention. She liked the way the hotel- keeper treated her because her husband does not treat her like that. She really liked that hotel- keeper because of the attention he gave her. Hemingway suggests that husbands these days do not give their wives the love and attention they deserve and want.
