A tale of two cities

             Sydney Carton, an alcoholic attorney is considered a good for nothing colleague to a flamboyant lawyer by the name of Stryer, who is defending Charles Darney. Carton seems to have no real lifestyle and doesn't seem to be in pursuit of any. While defending Charles for treason, Carton points out the astonishing resemblance to the defendant, which unfolds the prosecution's case for clearly identifying Darnay as the spy the authorities spotted.
             Charles was very thankful for Sydney to put himself on the line to help him get off the conviction. Even though Sydney had no real grudge over Charles, he is still jealous of him because the only person that made his life worthy, Lucie Manette was in love with Charles. After the trial, Carton escorts Charles to a tavern and asks how it feels to receive the attraction from a woman like Lucie. Carton despises and is insulted by Charles because he reminds him of all that he himself has given up and might have been.
             Before Charles gets married to Lucie, Sydney confesses his love for her, even though he still strives in seeing himself as relatively worthless. Sydney pleads to Lucie that she has helped him dream of a more valuable and prized existence. Sydney feeling worthless confesses that he would die for her any day to make her happy; all he wishes for is to please her in any way possible that he can.
             When traveling to France he was arrested as an emigrant, Lucie and Dr. Manette travel to Paris in hope of saving him. Charles remains in prison for a year and three months before receiving a trial. The end result of the trial puts Charles to death and he is awaiting his execution. Sydney comes up with a plan to help save him by trading places with Charles which puts him in a no win situation, because if some how someone catches on to what he does it could demolish all what he is trying to do for Lucie.
