A Hero in One Age Will be a Hero in Another

Today a superhero's story may be told through a television series or even a comic book, but in the Anglo- Saxon era hero's story was told through an epic. The epic poem, Beowulf describes a heroic man who saves a village from an evil sea creature. By definition, a hero is one of exceptional quality. The heroic Beowulf holds many heroic characteristics, from physical strength to supernatural abilities. Set aside from other middle age hero's, Beowulf is very similar to today's modern hero. A hero, then or now must have great physical strength. Today's modern hero, Superman, is known for lifting vehicles and other unnaturally heavy objects. It requires great strength for a man to lift skyscrapers and other massive objects. Like Superman, Beowulf retained great strength. B

Superman uses his x-ray vision to see through walls and other objects in the way to see the danger beyond normal human perception. Superman will immediately drop everything to fly across the world to save everyday people. No matter the battles or struggles, the true epic hero always prevails. Superman places his life in danger for complete strangers just as Beowulf does. Beowulf's strength was another attribute of the Anglo-Saxon warrior hero, just as Superman's unrelenting strength and soaring abilities. Like Beowulf, Superman also has many supernatural qualities. Like Superman, Beowulf traveled a long distance to save the village from Grendel. Beowulf swims for hours until he finally reaches Grendel's mother. Superman and Beowulf, both are highly respected by the people of their time. Like Beowulf, Superman helps keep peace in the world. He really had no business with the villagers, yet he came to their rescue out of the goodness of his heart. Since the first hero, all heroes have been known for their good deeds and were also well respected by society. After Beowulf defeats Grendel he swims down into the water for Grendel's mother. With any her there will be obstacles to face, but a hero will overcome the challenges as demonstrated by Beowulf and Superman. eowulf was the only man alive at the time that had the strength to kill a monster as vicious as Grendel.
