Aesop's Fables versus Leonard da Vinci's fable "the Goldfinch" Unlike the Leonard da Vinci's fable "The Goldfinch", Aesop's fables are considered appropriate reading material for children for several reasons.Aesop's fables appeal to children, as well as adults, because they convey values that are universal, that is acceptable by all cultures and societies of all times. For example, in "The boy who cried wolf" the moral is that, if one often lies, or falsely cries "wolf', people won't believe that person even when he/she tells the truth. And in "the lion and the mouse" we conclude that "little friends [(represented by the mouse)] may prove great friends [(represented by the lion)]". The hidden meaning in this fable is that, any person can make a contribution whether big or small. Aesop noticed how society often rejected those who appeared weak and small. He was himself a slave, and championed the cause of the little people. The Goldfinch by Leonard da Vinci, although it is well written, doesn't qualify as a fable, like Aesop's fables. The reason is that it ends with an unacceptable moral, namely for v
Thus, imprisoned life can be full of meaning, hope, and power to shape society. How can one say that life is not meaningful without freedom? Although the human body may be enslaved, it is more difficult to enslave the human spirit. We can not excuse the goldfinch that kills her children because young readers would identify with her little ones (They do not see the birds as birds). 3) The mother Goldfinch deprives her children from free choice. The mother Goldfinch commits several crimes and mistakes against her children: 1) She murders her children to save them from captivity. How does the mother Goldfinch know that her children wouldn't be freed later? What if they would be liberated later by the farmer?Consequently, very young reader might be affected negatively by the bad example of the mother Goldfinch. 4) The mother Goldfinch is not diligent in her endeavors. What does prevent her from seeking help? She chooses the easy way out. Otherwise children listeners would get the image that eventually they could be killed by the mother; and consequently, they would be psychologically affected, especially if they had perceived that their cherished characters suffer, then they would become traumatized. There is no strong love than mother's love. Let them decide their own fate when they grow up. Children also dream about adulthood and life; and they also do not like to see the death of a character to which they identify well. She can break through, but why can't she try harder to find a way to free her children? She has a belief supported by no facts. Aesop was a slave that saw thousands of slaves that did not take their lives, and hoped for liberation.
