Same Sex

             In the recent 2004 Presidential Election, the candidates for the different parties had several main issues that they made arguments on. Some of these issues included: the war on terror, health care plans, tax cuts, abortion, the environment, and same sex marriages. Why should the government of a free country decide whether or no same sex marriages should be legalized? Why should a couple of the same gender not be able to get the same benefits as a heterosexual, and have legal unions? By legalizing same sex marriages and unions, it would give those couples freedom, cause less discrimination, and give social, fundamental, legal, and personal significance to that group of people. Although it goes slightly against some cultures' beliefs, same sex marriages and unions should be legalized.
             Many people find the thought of same sex marriages and unions to be a considering factor to family value; however, by legalizing these issues, people regain their rights as an American citizen to practice the way they would like. In Canada the government allowed citizens the right to marriage. As of May 17, 2004 in Massachusetts, the court also made in legal in the state. They said they could not deny the protections of a civil marriage. The court also guaranteed equal treatment of all the citizens.
             Across the Atlantic there was a case in Ireland that dealt with a lesbian couple. They had wed in Canada and went back to Ireland. The two demanded that they should be recognized as joined, because unmarried couples pay higher income and inheritance tax. The case is still going. Nonetheless, similar circumstances are here in the United States.
             In Vermont, a judge also had made a ruling on family values. He ruled that same sex couples have the same rights to their children as heterosexual couples do.
