Stephen King

Stephen King is one of today's most popular writers. He has written over thirty-six novels, one hundred short stories, and non-fiction essays. King is a superb storyteller, and has a string of best-selling novels, many of which have been translated into many different languages. Each book he writes sells over a million copies in hardcover and about three million copies in paperback. For three decades, King has brought fear and terror to his readers. What makes King so popular? King's greatest achievement has been the revival and modernization of the horror genre. Stephen King is noted for being the master of horror and he can write an excellent classic horror story. His scariest novel is Salem's Lot, which is set in a small town in Maine. This town has little contact with the outside world. King uses this climate of secrecy to show how a vampire could easily exist in such a place. The horror stories of Stephen King, however, cover more than just monsters like vampires and werewolves. They cover the fear inside every human being. Stephen King does not stick to the same types of stories, which are proven successes. He wants to keep his readers guessing. He does this by combining different genres in

King has written a fairy tale and turned it into a classic for all ages. An example is Paul Sheldon from the novel Misery. As a joke, Carrie is invited to her Senior Prom and crowned Queen of the Prom. Alone in the bedroom, it becomes her entire world. The novel The Dead Zone deals with destructive political forces. Not only does King combine horror with other genre, he also changes the source of the horror from one novel to another. The events in a science fiction novel happen in the future or in another world. In this story, the main characters have to confront the evil twice. This indicates that Jessie is on the road to recovery. Paul Sheldon, a best-selling romance writer, is in a car wreck and is rescued by his Number One Fan, Annie Wilkes. Marty Coslaw is a ten year Page 6old who is confined to a wheelchair. On one sleepless night he gets a glimpse of the bald doctors with scissors, who are from another dimension. Science fiction uses myths and symbols to help create its world, and its picture of the future may be critical of the present. King plays on readers fears since there have been nuclear power plant accidents like Chernobyl in Russia where people have died from radiation poisoning. He has not let fame force him into repeating patterns, which are proven successes.
