History Thru Art

Art is one of the greatest ways of visualizing history, if not the most interesting way. Through art, history can be seen through imagination and the lives of the founding fathers can be distinguished in their characteristics and expressions. However, we are often fed only one side of the story and what we believe is mostly based of what the artwork tells us. It could be said that it almost has a Hollywood feel to it. For example, an actor or an actress could be very well loved for how they are portrayed as being a very happy person who works on beneficial programs to help homeless infants and always want to be of good to the community. Because we see this on the modern canvas called a television, we automatically feel that that is the way they've always been. It would never come to mind that this loved actor or actress lives in nothing but pain day by day in a suicidal and drug addicted world. That is almost how art pictures our history in general. Art is used to portray great explorers, the founders of the new world, and other important figures that had an impact on history as great noble men of valor or heroes and great adventurers. They are always portrayed as men who knew right from wr

They would never be able to tell from the painting that Columbus initiated the Atlantic slave trade (Digital History) or that he introduced to the new world various plagues and diseases that helped in the annihilations of many Indians (Digital History). But, even though the painting shows a lot of great things about him, it does not show the disasters that came along with Columbus. Someone without knowledge of him would not know that this great-looking figure in the painting was responsible for what is called an "American Holocaust"(Digital History) and was responsible for the deaths of millions of Indians. It looks really hot and dry with all the dust blowing in the air by the stomping of boots and the light brown that covers the background. Some are the only way people can believe in the existence of a person. It seems to be that a bloody battle is taking place. Art in any shape or form and even artifacts will never explain the full existence of a historical figure. If looked over and studied carefully, what can one say about Christopher Columbus? Landing of Columbus on the Islands of Guanahani, West Indies, 1847. Artworks and paintings do not tell history, they are just tidbits of a large puzzle. " That is a very good example of what the story would be if the whole history of the massacre were depicted from just the painting. A bright red, distinguishing him from the others, colors his clothing. It shows Columbus on his landing at the Islands of Guanahani in the West Indies. The complexions of the followers are darker and their clothing is composed of dark colors. He was one of the first influences on finding the new world.
