Caravaggio's The Calling of St. Matthew,
On Caravaggio's The Calling of St. Matthew, by John Berger is based on the testament of a modest painter and his inspirations. John Berger saw into the different aspects of art work, where Caravaggio's relates his work to the underworld. I agree that there are barriers to visions, things that inhibit the way we see or don't see original work's of art, problems that can be located in and over come by strategies of approach. The painter who influenced Berger the most was Caravaggio. He was the first painter who used his work from experience by the popolaccio, vagabonds who are the people of the back streets,
Matthew can be read into many assumptions. There are many way's to read in to a piece of art. Like in most of his work there is a window, the window is usually the portal of where the worst news comes from. This is true, because history can't be discovered it is to be experienced. Caravaggio uses his work to portray the way he envisions the world to others. also known as society's poor and unfortunate underworld. "What has been banished, along with the daylight are distance and solitude and both these are feared by the underworld". He imagined and saw a deeply personal meaning with his desire to survive. If your not there for it then you've missed it, but you can still learn from it. In the paintings, he uses windows to portray the underworld. Caravaggio related his work to the underworld, something dark and alone. It was also used to show and event happening outside. Where then a strange man who is portrayed to be Jesus open's a door in sudden surprise. The underworld wants you to be in the dark, alone and scared.
