Ernest Hemmingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway, born 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, was said to be one of the greatest writers of the “Lost Generation.” (A time period between World War 1 and World War 2) He was also very adventurous, outgoing, courageous, and had a way with the ladies; four wives and multiple girlfriends prove it. Starting out as a high school journalist, Hemingway rose to the top to become one of Americas most loved and well known authors.

Hemingway first lived at 339 Oak Park Ave. in a little house built by his grandfather, Ernest Hall. He was the second child of father, Dr. Clarence and mother, Grace Hall. Out of four sisters and one brother, he was chosen to be named after his grandfather and uncle whose name was Miller Hall. After his grandfather passed away he and the family moved to a rented house near the Scottville institute library, later they built a house a few blocks away from his Grandfathers’. During high school Hemingway was involved in the yearbook, literary magazine, and the school newspaper called the “Trapeze”. Later in 1924 Hemingway wrote the book, In Our Time, reflecting back on his youth and childhood struggles.

In 1917, just a year after graduating, Hemingway was hired to be a reporter for the Kansas City Star

Hemingway lived a very successful, wild, and fulfilling life. ”() Hemingway and Pound were good friends and each other’s encouragement to write. After the divorce he moved to Paris where he met Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, the men that taught and inspired Hemingway to be a top-notch author. He also encountered near death experiences when a taxi hit him, artillery shells blew in a hotel during the Spanish Civil War, and was badly wounded because of a plane crash nearby. and then quickly moved to being a correspondent for the Toronto Star. Although her work was often misunderstood and considered meaningless she also had an effect on Hemingway’s pursuit in becoming a great author. In 1932 he wrote a book called Death In The Afternoon, a book all about bullfighting witch he enjoyed very much. She was a friend of Hemingway’s literary friend, born 1891 in St.

The same year Hemingway divorced Richardson; he met Pauline Marie Pfeiffer, a well-educated catholic from Parkesburg, Illinois. While recovering in the hospital he met a young nurse named Agnus Von Kurowsky but broke up with her in 1920 because she was too young and he had to go back to America. 1935 a book about hunting and bravery called Green Hills of Africa was published. 1938 he wrote The Fifth Column and 1st 49 Stories about economic and political industries, and For Whom the Bell Tolls in 1940 about human brotherhood. Most critics and Americans in that time viewed Hemingway as a great writer, a writer of “The Lost Generation”. But losing his father by suicide and losing other people he loved got the best of him causing deep depression and death. War, traveling, bullfighting, life experiences, hunting, they all inspired him to write many works of literature.
