Coronary heart disease
Artherosclerosis and coronary thrombosis are together known as coronary heart disease.Artherosclerosis is a genetically predisposed, degenerative disease which affects bth medium and large sized arteries. The depositon of lipids on the lumen and inner surface of the artery slows blood flow, which may lead to coronary thrombosis (clotting) of the blood, should the arthrosclerosis occur in a coronary artery. There are a number of risk factrs associated with coronary heart disease, some of which we have no control. Uncontrollable factors are those such as a genetic predisposition to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels within the blood and diabetes, which are all factors that increase strain on the heart, leading t
It also improves circlation of the blood. Males have an increased likelihood of coronary heart disease than females. Myocardial infarction can occur as the part of the heart is deprived of its oxygen supply. The prescence of the hormone oestrogen is believed to have a protective effect against coronary heart disease as it tends to raise HDL cholesterol, which removes cholesterol from tissues and so it is good. Women have higher oestrogen levels than men. As an individual gets older physical activity tends to have an increased pressure on the heart, and the heart gets exhausted more easily. This results in coronary thrombosis which leads to myocardial infarction and strokes. Also hormone levels etc change with ge whih also affects likelihood to chd. However there are other risk factors which can be mdified to reduce the risk of this disease. Although we have no control over certain genetic factors, by increasing our physical exercise, eating healthy foods, by not smoking and by maintaining a healthy body weight, the risk of coronary heart disease can be greatly reduced. This is due to genetic make-up and also it may be due to hormone levels. High salt intake is also a risk factor as it can cause high blood pressure. These cells cannot respire and so cannot contract. Cigarettes also contain carbon monoxide and other chemicals that reduce the amount of oxygen carried by the blood and increase the risk of coronary thrombosis.
