Gay marriage

             The topic regarding gay marriages has been a controversial issue of debate over this last decade. Numerous individuals have stood firmly against gay marriages and many others have supported it. Those opposed to the topic have brought up an argument based on morality, and the individuals in support have argued that it as an infringement on a person's equal rights. Yet the union between two people as significant others has been perverse with individuals of the same genders, man and man or woman and woman, marrying each other. With this union being created, the tradition of couples is being ruined and the procreation of life is no more. And what gay couples may fail to realize are the increasing statistics of Americans against the issue as well as activists who stand against it.
             Pope John Paul II said this in an interview in 2002 with the Dads Against the Divorce Industry that "Attempts to define the family as something other than a solemnized lifelong union of man and woman which looks to the birth and nurture of children are bound to prove destructive.'' (Pullella) This basic idea constitutes that only a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman could form the basis of a family. An article in Florida Today newspaper, whose headlines read: "House Votes against Gay Marriages" said that the bill passed by the House was "a bill to restrict gay marriage." In reality, after this vote, gay couples can still marry only if the state chooses to recognize it as a marriage. What Congress refused to do was to "force all 50 states to accord same-sex relationships and the whole sweeping range of legislation that has been passed over the centuries, based on the assumption that this legislation would apply to a union between a man and a woman, who have the prospect of producing children that would have to be taken care of by them or by the society."
