Marijuana Controversy

A significant amount of the United States population admits to illegally using marijuana. Many people have found that using medical marijuana, where it is legal, has had nothing but positive results. I have seen many people young and old using marijuana for recreational use in the last four to five years of my life. In my past experiences with marijuana and marijuana users, I have realized that a very large amount of people habitually smoke marijuana. While being around people who use this drug and occasionally using it myself, I have seen both positive and negative effects. Although marijuana may cause health problems and impair a person's judgment, this illegal narcotic may also have many positive effects on economy and our population. The controversy with marijuana all revolves around the proposed legalization of the drug. While there is a large amount of the population who is strongly against the idea, the number of people who are in favor are growing every day. Politicians, mainly democrats and liberals are beginning to take the "stoner's" side. The governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, has made it very clear that he is in favor of legalizing the drug, and also that he was once a weed sm

I believe that marijuana is something that is not harmless. Another problem that is argued regarding this issue, are the laws that would be associated with it. Cohen, a writer for "Drug Topics", notes in his article that the medical industry was first introduced to the use of marijuana with proposition 215, in California around 1966. While marijuana has been labeled as a narcotic and a dangerous "mind altering" substance, it may not be something our country should be focusing on and banning from our people. Because of this many people have been wondering why the government does not put the same laws on marijuana, as they do on alcohol. Some supporters of over turning the prohibition believe that if marijuana were to become legal, the value of the drug would go down and the effort to make money for the government would be pointless. I feel that marijuana should be considered a remotely harmless drug, just like alcohol is currently treated in the United States. In the future our country may or may not legalize marijuana, but the truth is people will continue to buy it, and continue to use it. The penalties attached to a small marijuana violation are very severe, and have put many small time distributors and users in prison. If these penalties didn't apply, our prisons would have much more space for more serious criminals, and our government could stop spending billions of dollars on punishing people. They also believe that there would still be an underground sale that would take place, due to the popularity of the drug. Hopefully in the future people will be able to make that decision. Becker says, "Although some drug production would go underground to avoid high taxes, experience with liquor, gasoline, and cigarettes shows that most producers would operate legally.
