Compare and Contrast the three deaths on the island LOTF
Compare and Contrast the three deaths that occur in Lord of the Flies. What do they tell us about what is happening to the boys in the story? The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of boys on a seemingly perfect island. As time goes by things start to fall apart and become out of the boys' control. This results in three deaths during their stay on the island. The first of these deaths was "mulberry scar boy", during the out of control fire which burnt down half the island, taking a life with it. The boys initially feel guilt and sadness for having let the fire get out of control and being the cause of someone's death, but they seem to forget almost instantly and he is only mentioned once more, during the final assembly with Piggy, Ralph and Samneric. Ralph calls the last assembly because Jack and his tribe stole Piggy's glasses. Piggy is having a rant about it and says "...And there was that other kid what had a mark on his face. Who's seen him since we first came here?" His death was an accident and displays the boys' immaturity and poor organizational skills. There could have been more 'littluns' lost to the fire but no one noticed. The second death which occurred was Simon's. He was killed when the boys were ca
The rules that Ralph had thought of to help them were abolished and so was their security. I believe that Piggy was the strand holding everything together and the moment he was gone there was no hope for Ralph to take control back. Jack and his tribe had set the trap to kill either Ralph or Piggy, and Roger chose to pull the lever sending Piggy to his doom. "It was an accident, that's what it was. " Simon's death shows the decline from being proper and civilised English boys, into something savage and wild. Again we see the sea cleaning up their mess by taking Piggy away although it is also taking away all the common sense on the island. ught up in the excitement after the hunt and thought he was the beast. His death was so innocent, a complete accident, but none of the boys really cared, it was insignificant to them at the time. Ralph didn't have Piggy's common sense or Jack's leadership skills, so once Piggy was gone everything fell apart. Simon's death is an obvious indicator that the boys were becoming more savage and couldn't really control the urge to kill. Ironically the smoke from this fire is spotted by a naval cruiser and the boys are saved from eventual starvation, as all their food sources would have been burnt and their water contaminated. In this novel there is a huge decline in the boy's behaviour. He fell down onto a rock in the sea and was swept away. They don't want to believe that they could be so cruel as to kill someone.
