Evolution vs. Creationism
There has been a lot of controversy in the news lately about the theory of creationism, being taught along side with the theory of evolution. Creationism is the belief that human kind was created by a divine bring according to a literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis.(Teaching Scinece). Evolution is defined as the sequence of events involved in the evolutionary development of that species or taxonomic group of organisms.(McHugh, Paul) Creationism being taught in school is not only a violation of the First Amendment, separation of church and state, but is also is a non-scientific and unrealistic view of how the world was created. For these reasons, and others, creationism should not be taught in schools. Like wise evolution is based solely on science, and for no reason should it be removed from the biology or life science curriculum in public schools. "Our public schools must fulfill the First Amendment mandate of separation of church and state, and remain free form the influence of religious Dogma in order for students of all faiths to attend school without fear of coercion." (Teaching Science) This is a law, no religion in public schools. So then a statement of teaching creationism in schools is unlawful would not onl
"(Boston, Rob) This is the main concern for some educators. These are high school students in these classrooms, not kindergartners. It was made popular by scientist Charles Darwin. In the article written by Rob Boston, "What "Intelligent design"ers are really designing" a concerned parent, Tammy Kitzmiller, writes, "Children should be taught modern biology in public schools, not someone else's religious beliefs masquerading as science. Teaching creationism or intelligent design would be teaching straight from the bible, which is not a scientific document, however it is a religious book and would be infringing on the rights a student has according to the first amendment. Pubic schools have no business implementing religion on its students. (Teaching Science) It has been stated in this essay that teaching creationism is unconstitutional because it violates the first amendment, but also because creationism infringes on the right American citizens have for freedom of religion. "(Teaching Science) Science is the matter at hand. Most of them are intelligent enough to take academic biology, so aren't they also intelligent to form their own conclusions about how life began? To quote the ADL, " To deny students adequate education in biology for fear of insulting their religious sensibilities underestimates the ability of believers to distinguish between to scientific fact from matters of personal faith. It should be science, and science only that is taught in public school classrooms. In agreement with Tammy Kitzmiller, the students in pubic schools of America should not be learning someone else's religion masquerading as science! This is why creationism has no place in the public classroom, and it never should. Science is fact, and fact is what should be taught to our students, not airy religion. In the preceding essay it has been argued that creationism, the belief that human kind was created by a divine bring according to a literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis, is not only unconstitutional, but is unscientific, and has no business in the public school's science curriculum.
