Terri Schavio
Recently there has be a lot of news coverage on the Terri Schiavo case, the woman that has been on life support for the past fifteen years, and has her family fighting for whether she lives or dies. The epic battle that is going on between her parents-who is fighting for her life, and her husband, who would like to take her off the life support-have taken over the air waves and has America hanging by their every move. This matter has become so big that the government has now been involved in the case, trying to decide if the women should live or let to rest. Recently I have read two articles: "Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain", by Bob Lamendola and "Schiavo's Parents Suffer More Setbacks", written by Jill Barton to further my knowledge of the situation. In the first article "Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain" Bob Lamendola discusses the Terri Schiavo case, and more specifically her recent brain status. He quotes that about 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's brain is gone, and that many doctors claim this to be the worse brain damage that they have ever seen. Schiavo's scans show large black patches, which doctors said where cells have died due to a lack of oxygen and the tissue has
After reading these articles, I have realized what little control people have over their own lives and the people that they love. As of Wednesday April 23rd, Schiavo has gone five entire days without her feeding tube, food or even water. Barton reports that ten protesters were arrested outside hospice for trying to bring her water. It also takes back the dignity that is so riotously our. Cheshire is saying "she is in a minimally conscious state, a term used to describe someone who appears to be aware but not on a consistent basis (Lamendola). And when this decision has to be made, who should have the rights over their life-the parents, who raised them since they were born, or their significant other, who married for richer or poor and in sickness and health to love this person. Although both Lamendola and Barton both discuss the basics of the case, Lamendola goes further into detail about the positive look that Terri Schiavo could have. Her husband agrees with the court, stating Schiavo told him that she would not want to be kept alive artificially. Barton uses quotes that favor the removal of the feeding tube and doctors that are government appointed, appointed by President Bush who also said they have done all that they can for Schiavo. in him asking the court to reinsert her feeding tube while the state investigates her case. Barton writes that the court-appointed doctor states Schiavo is in a vegetative-state with little hope of recovery. When is a person so severely brain-damaged that they cannot even chose life or death, but yet respond to stimuli around them? Lamendola reports, "About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists (Lamendola). Lamendola quotes Cheshire again stating that after his 90 minute visit with Schiavo on March 1st, he did not agree that she was in a vegetative state, or totally unaware of herself or surroundings. And that he agrees with the parents, stating she seems to respond to voices, music, touch, and even painful voices.
