Steroids have been becoming more popular over the years despite all of the warnings and side effects. Professional sports players definitely don't help the whole thing, I mean they are kids role models. Steroids have a wide range of usages, from medicine, to help people, to illegal anabolic steroids, which increase performance. Steroids can be taken many different ways, anything from pills to an inject able liquid. Steroids give people the edge over the competition in this very competitive world. Males and females of many ages take them to gain this edge.
             Anabolic steroids are a powerful drug that people take to boost their performance. "The male hormone testosterone, derived mainly from the testes, is an anabolic and androgenic steroid responsible for the production and maintenance of the male physical features, as well as the recognizable male psychological and behavioral attributes"(Connely,27). " Steroids are synthetic agents closely related to the male sex hormone testosterone which promote body tissue-building processes"(Fitzhugh,45). The term anabolic means "building body tissue"(Fitzhugh,36) Anabolic steroids help build muscle tissue and also increase the person's body mass by acting like the bodies natural hormone.(Yesalis,15) Anabolic steroids were developed in the late 1930's, mainly to treat such problems as Hypogonadism, in which the testes don't produce enough testosterone for the normal growth, development, and sexual functions (FitzHugh,37).
             Anabolic steroids were first used in World War II in order to make German troops more aggressive (Gillis). During the 1930's, researches tested anabolic steroids on dogs, and they found that there was an increase in muscle mass.
