Russian culture

My term paper will be about the Russian culture. I have made this choice because I am an International Business student, specializing in Russia and Central Europe; and also because Russia has a long history and many unique cultural characteristics. I should also warn that I will talk more about the Soviet era than any other period from Russia’s past, because this, I believe, is the period which left the greatest impact on contemporary Russia.

I shall start this portion by singling out a set of events the effects of which linger in everyday life in Russia to this day, complete with their still visible aftermath.

• The ancient Russian state was erected in the 9th century, and originally was known as Kievan Rus, with the now Ukrainian city of Kiev serving as Russia’s first capital. In 988, under Prince Vladimir I of Kiev, Kievan Rus repudiated paganism in favor of Christianity, the most popular religion in Russia. In his honor, Russia celebrates St. Vladimir the Great’s Day every July 15.

• The Mongols invaded Russia in 1237 under Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, and were finally evicted in 1480, by Ivan III. They gave Russia the first taste of true despotism, isolati

The collapse of the Soviet Union gave decision-making power back to individuals.

(Indeed, a comic example of bureaucracy vis-à-vis Soviet education happened with an edict that Moscow once issued to then-Soviet Lithuania, when teaching students English (typically from the 5th grade onwards) to write in block letters only, and never in cursive; however, the author of this decree overlooked that the alphabets from both English and Lithuanian come from the Latin family!)

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the level of education plummeted. Do not show the Russians anything other than unity among your team.

“Negotiating

• Russians regard compromise as a sign of weakness; […] Russians would rather out-sit the other negotiator — and gain more concessions from the other side. ”

Intercultural Interaction

Verbal Interaction:

The Russian language is one that has super-complicated grammar, very hard to learn for a non-native.

• Russians form deeper friendships than Americans do — by American standards, smothering. The largest of them is the Winter Palace, now part of a group of buildings known as the State Hermitage Museum, which holds one of the world’s greatest collections of art. At the core of the communist platform was the redistribution of wealth, “taking from the have’s and giving to the haven-not’s.

Verbal Interaction – other

The Soviets discouraged creative thinking by individuals, because that could run counter to communist dogma. Psychologically controlling parents typically use strategies such as excessive criticism, contingent affection, guilt induction, restrictive communication, and invalidation of feelings in an attempt to control their children.

My supervisor and I then decided that I should prospect for clients among local Russian businesses, the owners of which would, undoubtedly, have more money than would people living in Russia. Other than that, and what I already wrote, I don’t have much to add on values. Peter the Great also had Saint Petersburg built, and made it Russia’s capital, which remained in that capacity until the end of tsarist rule in Russia.
