In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, three characters John Proctor, judge Danforth, and Abigail Williams all value their reputation. These characters in The Crucible have strong feelings about how others view their overall quality or character. Unfortunately other characters in the play have to pay for there bad actions.
             John Proctor will do almost anything to keep his reputation, he will lie and do everything in his power to protect it. John shows how he really values his reputation especially in the last act, act four. John was going to confess, and did, but when judge Danforth told him he was going to write his confession on a piece of paper and put it on the door of the church he would not stand for it. When Danforth asks him why he doesn't want to put it there he replies with a sudden outburst. He says " Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! I lie and sign my life to lies! How may I live without my name? I have gave you my soul; leave me my name." Proctors reputation and how he wanted to save it eventually led to his death. Proctor decides to rip up the paper even though he knows he will hang. He did not want to tell the people that Abigail told him it was a lie so that he wouldn't blow his cover about his affair. Apparently his reputation means more to him than his life.
             Like John Proctor, Judge Danforth lies and cheats to protect his name. Danforth signs a lot of peoples death warrants, when Proctor, Hale and the others start to tell him the real truth, you can tell he believes them and knows what he is doing . He knows he is lying, but he still goes on with what he is doing. He knows if he doesn't go on with what he is doing and says the people were all innocent and it was all the girls just playing it out, all his reputation will be soiled, and ruined.
