Mossy
The short story 'Mossy' by Audrey Evans is a story, which describes a character at a turning point in her life, who comes to a sudden realisation. In this essay I intend to show how, through her characterisation of Miss Stone, Audrey Evans shows the change in the character. Written in third-person narration and set in a Scottish secondary school, Miss Stone who is a very strict teacher who is always in control of her pupils. Miss Stone doesn't take any interest in any of her pupils, until on her last day before retirement when she is taken a detention for a teacher whom she previously taught she meets a boy called Wayne Docherty that she realises the pupils in front of her are all individuals and have their own problems. In this case it's Wayne and his life is terrible. The structure of this short story is such that it leaves the reader in no doubt about the change that occurs in the main character Miss Stone. At the beginning of the story Evans successfully builds up a picture of the main character as being a hard-hearted, uncaring individual who distances herself from others. We know Miss Stone is a heartless person because of the way she speaks to Dawn, one of the girls who attended the detention only becaus
We know Mossy's attitude has changed, as she is really nice to Dawn "He is, in fact still looking for his ideal woman. The change is finally completed at the end when she is leaving school with Wayne: "But it was the boy who drew her out into the rain and wind and dark. " This shows that even at the start when she told Dawn that Mr Downie was away meeting his fiancee and this made Dawn feel very disappointed, when she was leaving the detention room Mossy let dawn know that he wasn't engaged at all. This shows that Mossy can finally see what is wrong with Wayne as before it was as if something was blocking her vision. " The Italics at her reveals that the author is emphasising that Miss Stone is no longer in control. " This shows she has no sympathy for others and does not care about hurting their feelings. Mossy also shows clearly how she feels towards her colleagues when she says: "I have never involved myself with my formal pupils" this shows that she takes no interest in her pupils and takes nothing to do with them she just teaches them. We realise that at first this change is only slight when the narrator tells us that Miss Stone: "felt amused contempt for her (Dawn), and an admiring awareness of her own malice. It has been shown then, that the short story "Mossy" by Audrey Evans is a very good example of a story in which the main character Miss Stone changes dramatically over the course of the story. When she says, "I haven't time for a stroll down memory lane" this reveals that she is sarcastic and doesn't like to dwell on the past.
