A Doll's House Essay Henrik Ibsen
In nineteenth century Europe, marriage was considered a bond between a man and a woman. However, the nature of that bond at that time is very different from the nature of marriage in the world today. In the nineteenth century, the Women's Rights movement was still in its infant stages, and a woman's role in a relationship was very different then their roles today. In A Doll's House, there were two contrasting relationships that were truly able to demonstrate the nature of a woman's place in society. Nora and Christine were very much like polar opposites when it came to their personal lives and demeanor. Nora spent her life pampered and loved. She grew up with a father that belittled her, and she married a man that treated her the same as her father. (Ibsen, 63) She never truly grew up until the end of the play, and she never 'came into herself' until the play's conclusion. Nora spent her life as a child. On the other hand, Christine spent her life working hard and supporting her family. She worked to support her mother and her children. She married a rich man to ensure that her family would be given a good life. Christine understood the meaning of hard work, maturity, and endurance.
The traditional place for women was in the background, and taking the passive position in a relationship. The goals of the feminists are noble ones, but it seems that their interpretation and opinions concerning A Doll's House are misguided. Nora's revolutionary rediscovery is practically unbelievable. When comparing the roles of Nora and Christine in their marriages, we see three completely different reasons for their commitment to a married life. Over the past hundred and fifty years, feminists had made huge changes, but there certainly haven't been any rapid and amazing miracles. The purpose for Nora's marriage is a continuation of her childhood, a continuation of a simple life. On the other hand, Nora undergoes an unbelievable transformation. Finally we look at Nora's marriage, which isn't exactly done for love, and it isn't exactly done for money either. Nora's portrayal through most of the novel makes such an ending practically an unbelievable miracle. Her story is one of a long tough struggle that ends up working itself out. Christine's entire part of the play is the part that mirrors a plausible reality. Christine's marriage brings closure to Christine's part of the story. (Woman Workers) When a woman got married, her wealth was given to her husband.
