When rap music first came about in america it was seen as a form of entertainment for youths in black inner city neighborhoods. Hanging out with friends and rapping or listening to others rap kept black youths out of trouble in the dangerous neighborhoods in which they lived. So basically the dominant culture did not have a type of music that filled the needs of these black youths so they decided to create a new style of thier own. The mid and late 1980's saw rap music continue to become ever more popular in america with the birth of superstars like LL cool J and Run DMC and started developing in other east coast cities like Philadelphia as well as west cost cities like Los Angeles and Oakland. the black youths to express thier everyday lifes and struggles. Most true battles occur in various underground rap clubs, or even in a simple place such as a street corner. But the positive side of rap greatly outweighs the negative and rap will continue to become more and more popular every day. Some rap is rock-based, some is funk, and some is very close to the original "street" sound.

Today, confrontations are very common in rap and have even led to the deaths of quite a few top artists such as notorious b. The use of electronics also led to popularization of term "Hip-Hop" a music style that today walks hand in hand with rap music. Rappers dont just walk on stage and talk off the top of their heads, They write their songs, and they put a lot of thought into them. More well-known "battle" MCs such as Canibus may go public with a battle on the radio or produce a "diss" record and call out their opponent. Some rap may contain offensive language and others are acused of writing racist lyrics or lyrics that are insulting to women but as with all kinds of music the more popular it becomes te more likely you are to find good and bad sides.
