Lord Of The Flies

             In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack are two young boys who are engaged in an ongoing struggle for power. They are stranded on an island where the chances of getting rescued are little to none. Nobody knows where they are and if they are alive. Because of this, in order to keep order, there must be some kind of government or leadership. When this subject is brought up, Ralph and Jack both want to be "chief." As the story progresses, so does the tension between the two boys. The way they think and operate shows that they are complete opposites.
             When it comes to personality, Ralph and Jack are completely different. Ralph is the protagonist in the story. He is the son of a naval officer and a born leader. As the initial leader of the group of boys, he tries to remain rational and fair. Even after most of the boys have deserted him, he tries to maintain his rationality. Jack is the antagonist in the story. He is self-centered and a contrast to Ralph. He is both impulsive and aggressive and does not think rationally. Jack is the personification of evil, and when the wise Piggy is killed Ralph is forced to be the only good to fight against that evil.
             Ralph and Jack are also contradictory when it comes to goals. They are thinking on two completely different levels and going in different paths. Being that Ralph is the most level-headed out of the two, his goal is to be rescued. He longs for the secure world of grown-ups, especially when order starts breaking down on the island. This longing is revealed when his life is compared to the monotony of the ocean waves. He is daydreaming about being home, and the severity of the situation is really beginning to sink in. Jack, on the other hand, is focused on himself and is on a power trip. His goal is not to get off the island, but to rule it.
