To Tell Me Terrible Lies: Selfishness and Betrayal Selfishness is a word attributed to someone concerned with his or her own interests, needs, and wishes, while ignoring others. On the other hand, betrayal is defined as an act of disloyalty and unfaithfulness to someone or somebody. By definition, selfishness and betrayal are different from one another; however, they can be associated, both having to potential to cause a lot of harm. In her novel of the Wainwright Chronicles, To Tel Me Terrible Lies, Katherine St. Clare exposes those vices throughout many of her characters. A brief analysis of these characters will help understanding the different impact that selfishness and betrayal are capable to induce under certain circumstances. Selfishness is one of the key themes that should be discussed when analyzing St. Clare's novel, To Tell Me Terrible Lies. Thus, Serena surrounded by selfishness, decides to escape from Wainwright and her family temporarily, hoping that she would find peace and freedom. Serena also shows her selfishness, not returning home. Some feel guilt or remorse, and they try to make it right, as they seek forgiveness for the wrong they have done to others. He's jealous of Serena whom he desperately used to love. She stood there for a long time, eyes fixed upon the spot where she last seen him" (71).
