Response to Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

In Barbara Ehrenreich's book, "Nickel and Dimed," she makes a few groundbreaking conclusions after working as a low waged worker for periods of time. She claims that there is no such thing as "unskilled labor," (pg 193) which is widely believed to be true. She also makes claims such as; low-wage workers cannot show or admit their best skills (195), which is highly contrary to popular work ethnics here in America. Along with some other more widely believed, but commonly misguided conclusions regarding the enormous physical and emotional impact upon low-waged workers from their jobs.
Staring off with the more controversial claim, that there is no such thing as "unskilled labor." This is earth shattering for middle and upper class workers to comprehend, because it is believed that any job that pays six or seven dollars would be unskilled, due to the fact that anyone can hold the job. However, from first hand experience she quickly learns that if she wants to hold on to the job, she would have to learn the skills of the job, which usually were quite difficult, rapidly. Furthermore, she found that every few weeks she would have to learn new skills if she wanted to keep up on the job, which can be extremely demanding for a person who makes six or seven dollars an hour (193).
Moving on, to Ehrenreich's claim that low waged workers should never show their full potential on the job. This can come off and shocking to many Americans, due to its opposition to our doctrine work ethic. People believe that demonstrating their best job skills, will ultimately lead to salary raises, promotions and other fruitful benefits. However, Ehrenreich finds this belief
does not apply to low waged workers, since their superiors often take them advantage of them (195). She witnessed many co-workers overworked because their supervisors squeezed every last drop of sweat and tears out of them without any compensation.
