Chronicle of Death Foretold Editorial

One of the greatest mistakes in literature is when the author conjures a novel "by telling the story, by selecting and carefully arranging the conflicting versions of events into a highly structured narrative"(Lilburn). Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez employs this complicated, often misconstrued style to convey "a seemingly simple story about the murder of a young man in a small Columbian town." (Lilburn). A first glimpse into the novel, the narrator thoroughly finds and compiles information relating to the crime. However, if one were to look deep and intensely into the novel's plot, one would notice that "new information contradicts and undermines more often than if clarifies" as one reads through the chapters. "It is about the heart blowing to bits from the burden of its own beat." (H.Gass) Through the novel overall structure and use of language, high school students are often misconstrued and misguided to a writer's purpose and rhetoric by the novel's jumbled and unrelated events of which a murder currently happening, already happened, or is about to happen. "The book wasn't horrible, but the author keeps on switching topic. Anyways he does not write in an easy to follow manner either. I wasn't to part

The novel as a whole should be considered awkward because of the author's own goal and motives as he wrote the novel. " (Rabassa) One can see after reading the novel that "investigating the murder some twenty years ago in order to ascertain how such a thing could have happened . Finally, the novel is inconsistent by its overall structure leading to the tragedy of Santiago's unjustified murder due to honor. For these various reasons mentioned, the novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez should be discontinued in our schools. This mistake as a result, "undermines the notion of a single narrative authority . For example, through the narrator's point of view, the reader is exposed to fluctuating explanations of the weather during the morning of the crime. In contrast, the townspeople of the novel are confused just as the narrator is. " The narrator apparently has a very perplexed remembrance of the events regarding the events of the celebration. ial to reading this book maybe b/c I was forced to read it b/c of school but it's not something I would have picked to read otherwise" (Natalie, B&N book review). "We hear varying accounts of the weather on the morning of the crime.
