Poe as a Poet

             Poe grew up in a tragic life, he was orphaned as a boy and destroyed emotionally by deaths in his family. In his time, Poe wrote some of the deepest emotional poems and short story's, which are renowned for their complexity and feeling. Some say that his poems and writings reflect his life, and some contest that although his dark, and sinful objective works are as horrid as his life. Poe achieved his literary knowledge and skills from the University of Virginia where he was a good student but kicked out for one year because of gambling. To Virginia he addressed the famous poem 'Annabel Lee' which is a poem about death to a beautiful woman.
             Poe's theory for his poems were that they should have one point, and musical. Poe uses all literary devices and too the greatest extent. Repetition was emphasized in "The Bells, "Bells, Bells, Bells, Bells, Bells, Bells, Bells" at the end of the poem. This was used to put pressure and a feeling of insanity into the reader. An example of allusion, "Trojan War" and the alliteration "weary, way, worn, wonder" is shown in the poem "To Helen". The devices are expertly used and define romanticism by their use to express feeling.
             As Poe grew older he married his cousin Virginia when she was 15 years old. Like three others he loved Virgina died of terberculosous, while Poe spent 5 years caring for her. It is not difficult to find dark elements in Poe's poems, some even too violent, or unpleasant to have gained popularity in his time. "The Raven" is a fine example of Poe's distress, (if it is true that he reflected his life to poems) because it's dark, yet mindfully appealing idea of a raven telling a man that his love will never come back, "nevermore".
