The Rule of Law

             Rule of Law is a very important value to the United States. The Core Democratic Value of Rule of Law states that everyone, including government officials must follow and obey the law. This includes the President, Senators, normal citizens and other important officials. Rule of Law is on the minds of many people everyday. The importance of the Rule of Law is displayed in historical documents and even current issues today.
             Documents in which Rule of Law is discussed include The United States Constitution. In Article 1 of the Constitution there is the topic of impeachment. Impeachment is conducted when a government official breaks the law and they are removed from office. Thus it is proven that Rule of Law should be upheld and is taken seriously in the United States. The laws of the United States apply to everyone, and just because someone holds office does not mean that they are excluded from the laws. Rule of Law is applied in order to control the exercise of excessive power by government personnel. In Article 1, Section 3, Clause 7 of the Constitution it states, "But the party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to indictment, trial, judgment and punishment, according to the law." This quote from the Constitution is saying that in addition to being removed from office, the person being impeached can also be tried and convicted in regular court for breaking the law. The House of Representatives has the power to impeach the officials while the Senate tries them. The Vice President presides over the process unless the President is on trial in which case the Chief Justice of the United States does so. The Rule of Law does not apply only to serious crimes that require impeachment. On the contrary, government officials are subject to all laws both large and small just like the rest of the citizens of the United States.
