Balancing Between Technology and Education
In the new age of modern world, a lot of people admire the technology, innovations, and the invention of new things. As the research continues to progress and people look into the future, there is a possibility that technology will change our education system of learning. Technology, specifically the computer and the Internet, would be able to replace the traditional school. Significantly, there are always good and bad consequences from changing one to another. A lot of people might think that technology is a good thing since it helps people and changes our life style to become easier, better, and faster. However, according to the essay, "The End of Education" written by Neil Postman, the author believes that technology is a bad thing because it cannot replace the traditional way of teaching and education system. He supports his ideas by showing how technology, including the computer and the internet, cannot teach kids the social values, provide them with ways of becoming to be civilized people, and guide them to follow rules and be disciplined. I believe that even though technology is necessary for our life and school, it cannot provide the things school does. The most important and efficient example in Po
Same situation that can happen for Young John, who is likely to do other things beside learning the history of modern Japan when he gets bored. That's why kids are sent to school to obey rules and follow the directions of the teachers. That leads to the idea and function of school, where students learn to be disciplined, to be able to work with other people, to follow certain rules, such as, to raise the hand when you want to speak, be on time to all the classes, not to leave the class until the bell rings, and so on. So from these examples, we can clearly see how technology cannot teach kids the important value of education, while school can educate them and give them social values. As we all know, without technology we would all be still in the stone age, where humans made fire with leaves and stone, ate raw foods, and so on. Otherwise, all the kids in the world would just stay at home and learn by themselves if possible. One of the main functions of school is to teach students how to function to be good citizens, to know their responsibilities, and to learn the social values. These situations are true and very likely to happen because kids tend to do fun things first instead of studying. Postman mentions that the function of school is "making civilized people", and the Internet and computer cannot teach kids any of these significant values. While technology cannot teach the kids important social values, it can assist them in academic ways. According to Postman's quote, "We have ample evidence that it takes many years of teaching these values in school before they are accepted and internalized" (55), we can see how important and necessary of school is for kids in order to learn the basic values as a human and to continue as a good citizen in the rest of their life. I agree with Postman that the function of school is to teach us how to be a good citizen. The thing is that we need to know how to use the technology properly, meaning balancing between technology and education. Besides these things, at school we also can participate sports, be part of a student government, join variety of clubs, and events. There are numerous examples to present but the point is that having a good education system means it needs to highly depend on the computer.
