Breakfast at the Victory

             This is an article by James P. Carse which starts out talking about a man called Ernie who was "a veteran of the Last Good War." He ran a restaurant and did so working on just one leg. There is "mistism" in the place of business called The Victory which holds interest in the unknown draw that people have to it.
             The author tells of his professorship in a University and his draw to the unknown force that brings him back on a regular basis. As much as he tries to hide his identity in his "Levi jacket and jeans, and ... [not] cutting his hair for almost a year" Ernie seemed to read the professors history without hardly speaking.
             We are bought to a time where the author goes back to a time when he was in High School wrestling another student that was called "Growler!" This thought of his nick name made him think of fighting a man who pulls trees out by the roots with his "bare hand" and eats the bark. This a methodical journey takes back to The Victory and the thought of egos and the self discovery of why we have them.
             The story ends with Ernie losing the luncheonette to a new landlord and the memorable parts being disposed like the fleeting ebbs and flows of the Victories we have harbored in our minds.
             The author sets up a mental photo of a diner or luncheonette and a man called Ernie
             who works there. This is a visual picture placed in our minds through vivid description in words read and interpreted by the reader...me! This is done by using the coloration of words like "Worm of mustard onto a reeking mass of fried pastrami."
             This is where the author is surprised that Ernie the cook knows that he is a professor despite his hair and clothing.
             On page four I believe that a paragraph sums up the whole story. It is "The reason I didn't see the mysticism in the Victory is
