Character essay on Eveline

The story Eveline is about a young girl who chooses to continue a life of misery despite the opportunity to be reborn into a life of love. Through her vivid descriptions and examinations, James Joyce explores Eveline's world and conveys her thoughts and emotions to the reader. James Joyce's Eveline becomes a sympathetic character through details of her life and how she feels through the situations she is involved in.The character that James Joyce introduced to us as "Eveline" becomes a character we can relate and sympathize with. She lives a life of misery with her abusive and drunken father. Her father has threatened her life to remain with him and take care of the cage that he calls a home. Eveline's life soon takes a detour as she meets Frank whom has asked her to leave Ireland with him and begin a life together rid of her father and her torturous childhood. Although the life that Frank proposes sounds like Eveline's ticket out of the hands on her child beaten fa

We can sympathize with her emotions because at that age most of us want to break free from the staggering grip of parents, yet are still afraid, as is Eveline, of what the future might behold out of their security blanket. At this point we begin to feel a small bit of sympathy for Eveline as we see that her father is a regular abuser with his threats that are visible in the lines, "When they were growing up he had never gone for her, like he used to go for Harry and Ernest, because she was a girl; but lately he had begun to threaten her and say what he would do to her only for her dead mother's sake. That is what all of us dream on doing one day in our lives; run away. But soon this routine is somewhat mangled as a man by the name of Frank comes into her life. Every high school graduate feels that they know what life is about and how they could be out on there own, happy and content. to remind her of the promise to her mother, her promise to keel the home together as long as she could. Responsibilities and dedications become our lives and we are only left with what was merely a longing dream to escape. She is banished to a life that is started out by cleaning and keeping house to the burden she calls home and tending to two young children who she takes to school and feeds on a daily basis. But, in reality it is almost unreasonable or unthinkable for us to leave without proper explanation and careful planning. He was drawing her into them: he would drown her. Joyce depicts the family values and responsibilities Eveline holds when she says ". One may begin to relate with Eveline's feelings of pain and yearning to get away as all 19 years olds have.
