The Impact of the Eighteenth Century Books
Since the nineteenth century, the world had been changing really fast. As we have made dramatic progress in the science technology, the quality of life has been changed rapidly. However, those improvements of our lives have made us lazy to do anything because today our lives are flooded with the articles or goods. It is said since then that now we live in the hedonistic and materialistic culture. Living in those cultures, people do not need to care or worry about anything, and I think people dismiss from their minds to live together in peace because people tend to place a special emphasis more on the articles than on other people. As we start living in the hedonistic and materialistic culture, we have lost the value of the moral sense. Even now, it is worth to read and study a eighteenth century book, like Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, because it reminds us of the moral standards dismissed from today's our lives. I think many people who make a success of life today are influences by the eighteenth century books. Recently I have read the books about empirical and successful philosophy, such as Andrew Carnegie and Napoleon Hill. What they said in a book is really similar to what the eighteenth century books said. Both book
The eighteenth century books remind us strongly of the importance of morality dismissed from our lives. People can be satisfied with doing those things at that time, but doing those things is nothing and meaningless. " His eighth virtue, Justice, said similar thing, that is, "Wrong none, by doing Injuries or omitting the Benefits that are your Duty. Franklin stated he tried young people to awake to the fact that there is no easy way to success, and the morality is the most practical to make a success of life and obtain happiness. -" Today, I think many people waste or lose time because of the great advantage of technology. Franklin's life is expressed in plain terms: "A peanut farmer could become president. As I said, because we have lived in the hedonistic and materialistic culture, many people's mind or attitude becomes arrogant and irreverent. In the hedonistic and materialistic culture, our societies have been brimming over with insincere attitude, falsehood, hatred, envy, and jealousy. Today, we are much in need of the moral sense of old fashioned value to live and let live in peace, and ideally all nations, all religions, and all human beings should live together in peace. Even today, these moralities are very important to make a relationship and a success of life, but many people dismiss these moralities. A deceit produces only other people's hatred and anger; also damaging other people makes the same thing. In other words, Franklin tried to establish the universal standards among all human beings, and tried to apply these standards to personal criterion and objective. This is a reason why the moral sense of old fashioned values has been lost in our societies. We should consider that we have lived in the effortless society which is the hedonistic and materialistic culture for a long time. Finally, Franklin's thirteen virtues are not religious or scared, so anybody can practice them.
