Vicious Cycle of Poverty

             Philosopher George Farquhar once said, "There's no scandal like rags, nor any crime so shameful as poverty." He probably associates poverty with a shameful crime after witnessing the agony of the people living in poverty. Their living condition is appalling and they struggle to meet basic needs. They are deprived of access to basic sanitation and safe drinking water due to low income. Unless more opportunities are given to them, their predicament is not likely to improve. Even if they are determined to change their fate, they have to overcome all odds. People from the lowest-income families are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty because of social obstacles.
             As children from lowest-income families, they are at a disadvantage since school. Often, they come to school feeling ravenous. Their mind is not on the lessons that their teachers try to deliver but probably on when their next meal would be. At the same time, they have to compete with their classmates who can afford tuitions for every subject while their parents cannot afford any tuition for them at all. In Singapore, the primary schools with better academic reputation are located in the elite districts, along Bukit Timah Road. This will allow the rich to have priority in enrolling their children into these schools. As these schools offer better enrichment activities and facilities, the poor are at a disadvantage in giving their children a head start to receive good education. In developing countries such as India and Indonesia, children from these families are not even able to complete their primary education as they have to contribute economically to their families.
             The lack of education will result in limited job opportunities. In most parts of the world, selection of employment are based on academic results.
