Propaganda

             Everyday the citizens of the United States are subject to some form of propaganda. This technique of controlling the public thought does not just affect our citizens, but often times it affects citizens of other countries as well. In an attempt to control the publics thought process the government has resulted to using mass propaganda for selling war.
             The definition of propaganda is, "information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause" (WordNet). This definition is vague; one could write an entire book on the definition of propaganda alone. This is not the topic of discussion in this paper. What is being examined is the use and effects of propaganda.
             Propaganda is used in many ways. One of those is by the military. The military uses propaganda to promote wars and such involvement in violent acts. Amongst the American public the military often controls what is dispersed by the media, allowing us to see and hear only what they want us to. This is a technique the military and government has mastered, not surprisingly, since the use of propaganda in the U.S. dates back to President Woodrow Wilson and World War I. The only difference is during his time it was labeled "Historical Engineering", or otherwise defined by Noam Chomsky as "designing the facts of history so that they would serve state policy."(Chomsky, "Media Control" 11) He goes on to say that, "...the U.S. government wanted to silence opposition to war.", the entire reasoning behind military propaganda in the United States was and still is to rid any opposition to a certain war. The U.S. government has always asked for the support of the citizens in any major offensive. They do this because they have too, since we live in a democratic state than the government cannot force citizens to believe in what they're doing.
