On Feburary 2nd, 1996, two students and one teacher were killed when 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis brutally opened fire on his algebra class. In March of 1996, sixteen children and on teacher were killed at Dunblane Primary School; ten others were wounded in the vicious attack. Fast forward to 1997, where thirteen students were killed and another fourteen were wounded in grand total of five school shootings. The following year the number of school shootings increased by one, bringing to the total school shootings in 1998 to a total of six. No parent should ever have to endure the nightmare of watching his or her child leave for school in the morning, only to be pronounced dead by end of the day. Life is a priceless thing and the death of each of those students did not have to occur, nor will another school shooting occur in the future, if metal detectors were installed in every school in our nation. Never having to worry about your child's safety during school hours comes to mind, as does the decrease of any violent activity during school hours. If congestion is an issue, I would to turn your attention to the above. True, metal detectors can not erase those who have died and have been injured in the past, but what they can do is stand in honor of the fallen to guarantee something so gruesome will never happen again. No child crazy enough would ever attempt anything as drastic as a school shooting knowing that as soon as they through those doors, they're caught. Yes, it may take awhile to get every student through the system and inspected thoroughly, however how can you be opposed to trading time inspecting the students in exchange for the lives of those students? 3It is said that school is intended for learning and the that saying goes on to include "children are our future. Worrying about your child's safety during school hours should even be an option and with the simple installation of metal detectors in your child's school, that can easily become a reality.
