Jerome Morrow is a coward who shows no redeeming qualities

Jerome Morrow is a coward who shows no redeeming qualitiesJerome Morrow is not a coward; however he is someone who finds it difficult to accept that he is second best with his superior genetic quotient. Apart from Jerome killing himself in the end, his interaction with Vincent throughout the film shows his many redeeming qualities.Like Anton, Jerome has experienced the humiliation of being a 'valid' who has failed to benefit from his supposedly advanced genetic makeup. A 'valid' believes they have the genes to become the best at what they do. Though they fail to realize that there are other people around them that may be better. This is seen clearly through the character of Anton when he says "I bet I could be an astronaut if I wanted". We can see that Jerome takes on the same persona with his comment "Jerome Morrow was never meant to be one step down from the podium. With all I had going for me, I was still second best." By the end of

the film Jerome accepts that he is second best by wearing the silver medal around his neck and kills himself. "I got the better end of the deal", this shows us how Jerome left the world not as a conqueror not a coward. These redeeming qualities show us how Jerome is not a coward. Jerome had to cope with the competitive life as a valid, but through his relationship with Vincent and his new name Eugene, the redeeming qualities came out in him which substantiated the fact that he was not a coward. "You can't quit on me now-I've put too much into this". Again the act of suicide is not a cowardly act in Jerome's but infact a turning point in the film. His death is significant to the film as it symbolizes the continuation of Jerome at number one. Jerome may show signs of being a coward but he infact held himself quite well to his failure in life. His interaction with Vincent shows his humour and personality which other valid's did not possess. This illustrates to the viewer how much effort Jerome has put into supplying DNA for Vincent and also shows the viewer the support he laid towards Vincent. " This shows us that Jerome is not afraid to fight back for what he wants. It was Jerome's good qualities that helped him to fulfill his dream of satisfying his genetic makeup.
