Hockey Fight Off The Ice
In the history of sports not one season has been annulled until Wednesday, February 16, 2005, when National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman canceled the entire 2004-2005 NHL season. Due to inability to coordinate an agreement between the League and the National Hockey League Players Association there will be no hockey this year. When the Collective Bargaining Agreement, an arrangement negotiated between the NHL Players' Association and the owners that sets forth the rights and obligations of the players, expired September 15, 2004 many problems surfaced mainly concerning a salary cap (CBC Sports Online). With economic issues concerning both sides, stubbornness plagues the unyielding players and owners. Owners are demanding a salary cap to restrain the rapidly increasing income of overpriced athletes and players resent a restriction on their value to a team, but who is to blame for this year's absence of a professional sport? Obviously many reforms are necessary before we will see hockey again in the U.S., however most of the concessions must come from the unreasonable players. Until one side makes more drastic concessions, professional hockey will not be played on U. "We won't be agreeing to a salary cap," explains Bob Goodenow, executive director of the National Hockey League Player Association, in response to negotiation attempts by Bettman (CBC Sports Online). Bettman announced an increase of 240 percent in player salaries compared to only a 160 percent increase in revenues. This dispute may have inadvertently sparked the extinction of Hockey through fan denunciation. Players can threaten a strike if they feel that their wages are not adequate enough. Both sides have shown their stubbornness in regards to each other's perspective. Each victory that a team accomplishes gives that team a few more fans. Exhibiting many benefits and only one minor draw back, the players association greedily declines a salary cap that would have allowed this season to begin. As the owners compete amongst each other player costs continue to rise. The controversial issue that initiated a lock down by hockey team owners has been a long overdue problem that will not disappear until a salary cap is instituted. With their wages increasing and unwillingness to compromise hockey players are to blame for the cancellation of 2004-2005 National Hockey League season. When all teams have the same amount they can spend on obtaining the most talented sportsmen, skillful players will be more evenly dispersed. Owners are accused of not compromising its position, while the players have done nothing except make submissions (Rob Purchase and Bob Goodenow). As the cost of living or league income increases, the salary cap amount can increase over time.
