Vengeance
Arthur Millers The Crucible is a classic novel about the 1692 Salem witch trials. In that year nineteen people and two dogs were convicted and killed for acts of witchcraft. The reasons behind the accusations resulted in many disagreements that happened over the years. After the accusations began, grudges began to surface in the community. Small insignificant actions were made out to be witchcraft, and the devil was responsible for bad business deals. One of the main characters John Proctor stated it best when he said, "Vengeance is walking Salem." (Miller 73)The in the beginning of the book the girls in the village have been caught dancing in the woods. As one of them falls sick, rumors start to fly that there is witchcraft going on in the woods. Once the girls talk to each other, they become more and more frightened of being accused as witches. After telling the truth to Revered Hale and Revered Parris Abigail starts the accusations by saying, "I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osborne with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! Another girl, Betty, continues the cry with, I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!" (Mil
ler 45) The other girls all join in so that the blame will not be placed on them. Corey declares that he bought it from Goody Nurse but Putnam argues that he owns it, and Goody Nurse had no authority to sell it. Many people in the town disagreed and questioned Reverend Parris' actions. Soon after, Putnam's daughter accuses George Jacobs of witchery; Corey claims that Putnam only wants Jacobs' land. In Act I Reverend Parris says to Abigail "If you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it. "Oh Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. During the court proceedings Abigail acted as if Mary Warren sent her spirit up to the rafters and began to talk to the spirit. John Proctor was eventually killedIn The Crucible two characters, Giles Corey and Thomas Putnam, argue in act one of the book about some land. When he is trying to get Abigail to tell the truth he says "I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministry's at stake, my ministry and perhaps your cousin's life. Mary knew that if she told the truth that the other girls would turn on her and accuse her of being a witch, but if she didn't tell on the girls then John Proctor would kill her. John Proctor convinced Mary Warren to testify against the girls. " (Miller 11) In that quote, he explains that he is more concerned about his ministry being at risk than Betty's well being. In Act One, he complains about his salary and the house. Abigail thought that if she got rid of Elizabeth Proctor, then John Proctor would return to her.
