Frida Kahlo and Edvard Munch
How have the artists communicated meaning when reacting to events in their life and/or exploring private emotions?Frida Kahlo's 'The Broken Column' 1944 and Edvard Munch's 'Evening on Karl Johan' 1982. Frida Kahlo's 'The Broken Column' is portraying an image of her life and her experiences. Even though Frida Kahlo was thought to be a surrealist, she solely painted her reality that portrayed her mental and physical pain. Andre Breton, a surrealist poet, once actually remarked that Kahlo was a surrealist, but Kahlo denied arguing that she only painted her reality and her experiences of life. Although Kahlo was aware of the surrealist movement, she did not necessarily get involved with it. Kahlo's paints were actually highly personal self-portraits that revealed the most painful aspects of her life. The most significant event in Kahlo's life was the most tragic one as well. At the age of eighteen, she was involved in a serious bus accident that not only changed her for the duration, but that also changed her life; her body was almost ruined. Both her spinal column and pelvis were broken in three places. Not capable of leaving her bed, and with out many options to pass her time, Kahlo began painting; this was her only way
Kahlo communicates with simple items as symbols, and a straightforward, realistic style of painting, which is surrealistic at the same time, and Munch expresses himself by drawing his feelings onto a canvas, using a secluded and very private method in symbolism. A strange thing about Munch is that he uses 'private' symbolism through his artworks. The texture is smooth and natural, blending colours in such features like her skin. Kahlo has used earthy tones and big, empty spaces like the empty blue sky and the sandy beach to evoke a feeling of melancholiness. Kahlo's face shows both courage, and resignation; Kahlo's nudity may suggest that she felt she could do little about her situation. Munch communicates through his painting by painting how he feels, and not what he sees. In such a world, Munch can't help thinking of himself as a meaningless black stain, just about to get lost and melt into the darkness. A lot of dark tones are colours are used, like dark green, black, dark, rich wine red and the deep, deep ocean blue of the sky, along with a mysterious 'glow' among the buildings. Similar to Kahlo, Munch incorporates strong, bold, contrasting colours into his piece. Kahlo uses strong, bold, rich colours which reflect her determined and strong mind. One of the paintings that represented her feelings was 'The Broken Column. The vibes that the painting gives out are mysterious and solemn, suggesting a hidden message deep inside the piece.
