Multiple Identities-The Great Gatsby
Fraud, objects, duplicity, obtainability, misconception, these words all signify a part of Jay Gatsby. Other proclamations could be noted while thinking about who Gatsby really is and what other characters in The Great Gatsby are just like him. Many can be considered in some form or another, but there are just two supporting characters that achieve self worth amidst longing for what could not be. In this novel, Daisy is distinguished as a reflection of the main character, Jay Gatsby. Most wealthy citizens believe that the more toys, the more joys. Of course, these fortunate few, can afford anything and everything, whether for social status or for self enjoyment. For instance, Daisy Buchanan is a very pretty and intelligent woman. She has been raised to believe that money and implements are everything. "Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay. The lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile..." (Fitzgerald 11). The narrator, Nick Carraway, describes Daisy's house while being in a speechless sense of awe. Another character that interestingly reflects Gatsby is Myrtle. ' He jumped off to give me a better view. He can only find satisfaction through who he really is, not who he tries to be. Gatsby is trying to impress Nick Carraway by showing off his beautiful and expensive car. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars" (43). upbringing, Daisy is a very materialistic, shapeless woman. Gatsby was born poor and was unable to learn what it is to be part of the wealthy. Similarly, Gatsby feels that objects are a necessity. A part of Gatsby is shown through Daisy, and that part is their corrupt craving to have it all. She buys what they buy and wears what they wear, wishing to fit in with the rich life style. Things are important to have as a measure of a person's worth. Gatsby uses things to attract friends, while Daisy uses them because they give her a sense of value and esteem. "There was music from my neighbor's house through the summer nights. These segments, although they are not great qualities, display what it is that he longs for to complete of his life's goal. Gatsby has grand, widely known parties in attempt to promote his social status.
